Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties Awards Over $1 Million
in Scholarships to 123 Deserving Students

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (June 28, 2016) – This year, 123 deserving students are fulfilling their educational dreams thanks, in part, to the donors of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. These students are the recipients of $1,051,200 in scholarships awarded by the organization.

The Community Foundation has more than 100 scholarship funds, established by donors who are committed to education, and often named in the memory of a loved one. The organization has awarded more than $9.3 million in scholarship grants since 1983, and helped 1,923 students, making it one of the largest providers of scholarships in the two counties.

Students are evaluated by an advisory committee of board members and community volunteers based on a written application, test scores, transcripts and interviews. Individual scholarships ranged in amounts from $1,000 to $60,000 this year and were awarded to students from 32 high schools and colleges.

“As the cost of college continues to rise, so does the need of many students,” said Brad Hurlburt, president and CEO of the Community Foundation. “It is through the generosity of our donors that these needs can be met. Our scholarship program is a wonderful way to empower local youth and show them the impact of philanthropy.”

His scholarship fund was created to assist students in high school or college pursuing a career in agriculture, horticulture, turf grass, forestry, other agricultural science or dealing with the production and management of plants.

Born in 1904 in Macon, Ga., R. Bruce Jones grew up in the south and was raised on stories of his family’s six generations of military men and lawyers. In 1932, after college, Jones began his lengthy military career and entered the Army Reserve as a second lieutenant in the field of artillery and later transferred to the armored force. His service spanned a 27-year career, including more than five years of active duty during World War II, where he earned nine awards including the Silver Star from Battle of the Bulge and the Croix De Guerre of Luxembourg.

After his distinguished service in WWII, Col. Jones moved to Palm Beach County, and in 1946 became a partner in the law firm of Earnest, Lewis, Smith and Jones (now called Jones, Foster, Johnson and Stubbs, P.A.). During his legal career, he was instrumental in the development of the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative and its continued growth for 25 years as General Counsel.

After his death in 1989, the R. Bruce Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund was created at the Community Foundation by the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative. The interest from the endowment fund provides four-year scholarships to graduating seniors from public or private high schools in Palm Beach County or Clewiston. The Scholarship award criteria includes academic excellence, extra-curricular activities and financial need.
