Over $250,000 has been raised to provide assistance in the wake of Hurricane Dorian

The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties has established the Bahamas Disaster Relief Fund to provide assistance to those affected by Hurricane Dorian. To date, more $250,000 has been raised by over 100 donors with a generous matching gift of $100,000 from Mr. and Mrs. J. Ira Harris.

The fund will be used to provide assistance for emergency food, shelter, and other basic needs for citizens in the Bahamas and those seeking refuge in Palm Beach and Martin Counties, as well as support long-term recovery efforts following the destruction caused by the category five storm.

“Hurricane Dorian delivered a devastating blow to the Bahamas earlier this month, and we are committed to helping our Bahamian neighbors recover from this disaster,” said Bradley Hurlburt, President and CEO of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. “We are eager to support both immediate and long-term relief and recovery efforts. Through the generosity of members in our community, including Mr. and Mrs. Harris, we are able to provide aid to thousands in critical need.”

Funds will be donated to charitable organizations identified and working in partnership with the Bahamian people, including the Eagles Wings Foundation, an organization that’s focused on collecting, organizing and distributing supplies and providing direct relief across the Abaco Islands.

Residents who are interested in making a donation to the Bahamas Disaster Relief Fund can visit the Community Foundation’s website. There is a minimum $10 donation, but administrative fees have been waived.

“My wife and I are huge believers in giving back to those in need and when we heard about the level of devastation in the Bahamas we knew that action needed to be taken, and this motivated us to set up a fund,” Palm Beach resident J. Ira Harris said. “I served on the Chicago Community Foundation board for 19 years and know the great work that local community foundations do, and since moving to Florida have been involved with the Community Foundation of Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Many people in our area have vacationed in the Bahamas, which is why we knew that others would be motivated to assist those who were affected by this storm.”
