About the Fund

With roots in Long Island, a summer retreat in the Great Smokey Mountains, and a home in Stuart’s Mariner Sands, Esther could have chosen to invest in the future of any number of communities. As she considered the legacy she wanted to leave for generations to come, however, her focus rested squarely on Martin County. Esther loved young people and volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club in Port Salerno. She established this scholarship fund through a charitable remainder unitrust in her estate plan.

“It provides a wonderful start for the boys and girls. If we can get children while they’re young, they can become better citizens when they get older. “

“I’m dedicated to saving lives, ” she adds.

“There is a great need for scholarships for young people who want to gain skills and knowledge that they can apply directly to making a living, ” Mrs. McShurley says “Many of these children would like to start their own businesses. This will give them an opportunity to do so. This is my legacy. It’s a way to be remembered, ” she observes. “It’s nice to know that the children who receive this scholarship will know who I am and what I look like. It’s a good feeling to know that someone will have an opportunity to make something of themselves and make this a better world. “
