About the Fund

Leah was a passionate advocate for the environment and environmental education. She spent more than 30 years as a community, health-care, education and environmental activist. She gained national recognition as a director of the National Audubon Society, and served on the Governing Board of the South Florida Water Management District from 1991-1995. She served the community in many ways, and was recognized with multiple awards. One of Leah’s many legacies was her work with the Gale Academy of Environmental Science and Technology at Forest Hill High School. As a lasting memorial tribute, the Friends of Gale Academy established this fund in her name.

“She rose to the level of icon with regards to the Everglades. She was a woman who literally devoted her life to caring about the resources of South Florida and the Everglades. Early on, before people even understood we had problems, she was a leader.”
– JOHN FUMERO, FORMER GENERAL COUNSEL TO THE SOUTH FLORIDA WATER MANAGEMENT DISTRICT

“Leah was one of the hardest-working people I know, and she never did anything halfway.”
– CYNTHIA PLOCKELMAN,VICE PRESIDENT, AUDUBON CHAPTER

“Leah Schad was a passionate advocate for the environment and could not be intimidated. She was a good, reliable news source and, after I retired, became a good friend.”
– MARTHA MUSGROVE, RETIRED ASSOCIATE EDITOR OF THE MIAMI HERALD AND PRESIDENT, DECISION MAKERS FORUM, INC.
