About the Fund

Ryan Kollmer (1971-1990)

Ryan Kollmer’s love of music, adventurous spirit, and pursuit of excellence left a lasting impact on his family, friends, and neighbors in Juno Beach.

Music was central to Ryan’s life from an early age. The only son of former Juno Beach Mayor Bill Kollmer and his wife, Marianne, Ryan began playing the saxophone in elementary school. By the time he reached Palm Beach Gardens High School, he was a standout member of the jazz ensemble, concert band, and marching band, eventually serving as Band President his senior year.

Ryan’s talents extended well beyond music. A well-rounded and energetic student, he was a member of the high school soccer team and earned numerous accolades, including National Merit Finalist, first alto saxophone in the Palm Beach All-County Band, and first-team selection to The Palm Beach Post All-Area All-Academic Soccer Team. In 1989, he was named Outstanding Student by the Exchange Club of the Northern Palm Beaches and earned recognition through the Program to Recognize Initiative and Distinction in Education. Despite his many honors, Ryan remained grounded and beloved for his “Saturday Night Live” sense of humor and easygoing nature.

Graduating in the top five percent of his class, Ryan was also the Silver Knight Award winner in Athletics. He went on to attend Duke University, where he continued his musical journey as a member of the Blue Devils Marching Band. Tragically, during his freshman year, Ryan died suddenly from complications of an undetected tumor.

In response to the overwhelming outpouring of support from the community, Bill and Marianne Kollmer established the Ryan Kollmer Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties in 1994. The fund honors Ryan’s vibrant legacy by supporting senior band members at Palm Beach Gardens High School who demonstrate a well-rounded involvement in music, sports, and other activities. While there is no minimum GPA requirement, recipients must continue their musical studies in college, though a music major is not required.

“Ryan was the best all-around student I’ve ever had,” said Wayne Miller, former band director at Palm Beach Gardens High School. “He was really exceptional – the kind of son everyone wishes for.”

Reflecting on their friendship, classmate Scott Bradfield shared, “Ryan Kollmer was the best friend I have had, or I suspect, will ever have. At an uncertain, confusing age for anyone, he was a constant sidekick in my life – a playmate, an academic competitor, a leader, and always a companion. Having experienced his friendship at such an early age, I have difficulty finding others that can match the standards he set. He was a complete person and is sorely missed.”

Through this scholarship, the Kollmer family ensures that Ryan’s spirit, talent, and kindness continue to inspire future generations.
