About the Fund

Irene believed in the power of education as a path to a better life – and a stronger community. She was a long-time education and community activist, who left segregated schools in West Palm Beach to teach in South Bay. She began as an intern at Rosenwald Elementary School in 1953, became a teacher and then assistant principal until her retirement in 1987. She continued to be active in the Glades community, and her legacy lives on through her scholarship, which is available to Belle Glade and South Bay students interested in pursuing a degree in elementary education.

“She always found time to help others.” -MYRTLE RAINS, LONGTIME FRIEND

“Many people saw her as very laid back. But she was also very instrumental in getting people to advance themselves and help the community. In her own quiet way, she convinced people they had a role to play in making life better for the next generation.” -SANJENA CLAY, DAUGHTER
