About the Fund

Judith Helen McConnell Lake (1943-1986)

Judy Lake’s passion for life, her unwavering kindness and her deep love for family and friends left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her.

Born on July 4, 1943, in Westfield, Massachusetts, Judy and her brother, Danny, were raised by their grandmother and aunt. After surviving rheumatic fever as a child, Judy developed rheumatoid arthritis in her early 20s. Despite the challenges of a debilitating illness, she grew into a warm, resilient woman who inspired others through her strength, compassion and joy.

After graduating from high school, Judy met her husband, Dick, while he was attending college. Together, they built a life full of love and devotion, raising their son, Brian. Friends remembered Judy as a gifted listener with a stabilizing presence, someone who always made others feel special.

Throughout her life, Judy refused to let her illness define her. She gave freely of herself — to family, friends and even strangers — always putting others first. Her positive spirit and inner strength remained constant beacons of hope and courage.

In 1988, the Judy Lake Memorial Fund was established by Dick Lake as a living tribute to her remarkable life following her passing in 1986. A portion of the fund’s income supports the Arthritis Foundation Mid-East Florida Branch to sponsor educational seminars on rheumatoid arthritis for both the medical community and the public. The remainder assists with education efforts surrounding other diseases.

Judy’s memory continues to inspire compassion, resilience and hope — a legacy of love that touches countless lives.
