Loggerhead Marinelife Center Endowment Fund (est. 2016)
Since then, LMC has grown to become the sixth most-visited cultural facility in Palm Beach County, welcoming over 300,000 visitors from around the globe annually at admission-free status – thanks to the generous support of donors and other community members. LMC’s seaside location on one of the world’s most densely-populated loggerhead sea turtle nesting beaches allows LMC researchers to monitor 9.5 miles of beach to better understand the sea turtles that nest there. The center is also home to the only sea turtle hospital between Orlando and the Florida Keys, utilizing state-of-the-art medical equipment to
give threatened and endangered sea turtles a second chance at survival.
In carrying out founder Eleanor Fletcher’s mission of educating others, LMC offers more than 30 public and educational programs and has developed practical solutions to environmental problems. LMC’s Responsible Pier Initiative educates anglers and other pier-goers about responsible fishing practices and how to respond to a sea turtle hooking. The Juno Beach Pier, managed by LMC since 2014, was the first to adopt this program.
Loggerhead Marinelife Center continues to grow its conservation portfolio, implementing a wide variety of initiatives – including 16 global conservation partners and 50 fishing pier partners – medical advances in sea turtle rehabilitation and innovative research methods. The center has received four-star rankings multiple times in Charity Navigator, graciously accepted Discover the Palm Beaches’ 2015 Providencia Award for contributions to the Palm Beach County’s tourism and has been covered in international media outlets including the Washington Post, National Geographic, Boston Globe and more.
Because of LMC’s growth over the past few years, there is a need expand in order to amplify and accelerate the center’s efforts in ocean conservation. In 2017, LMC will kick off an ambitious capital campaign to expand the facility in hopes of allowing our center to rehabilitate more sea turtle patients, educate more students and welcome additional guests and visiting scientists from around the globe. However, this cannot be achieved without the generous support of donors and other community members. LMC is humbled and excited for this opportunity to increase its conservation impact and looks forward to moving towards achieving this historic endeavor.
