Palm Beach Zoo Wildlife Conservation Endowment fund (est. 2016)
Our Mission: The Zoological Society of the Palm Beaches, Inc. (Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society) exists to inspire people to act on behalf of wildlife and the natural world. We advance our conservation mission through endangered species propagation, education and support of conservation initiatives in the field. Our commitment to sustainable business practices elevates our capacity to inspire others.
Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society is a 501(c)(3) organization occupying 23 acres of leased land within Dreher Park in the city of West Palm Beach. The Zoo grounds started out as a botanical garden in the first half of the 1900’s managed by Paul Dreher, who became the city’s first parks director. Much of the lush foliage from that era has been retained, creating the shaded tropical pathways that make Palm Beach Zoo so unique.
Over 325,000 people visit the Zoo annually, ranging from elementary school children on field trips to local families and tourists from all around the world. We care for over 550 animals, including many rescues and highly endangered species. Nearly all of the species represented at the Zoo come from tropical regions around the world and are quite at home in our South Florida climate. And their habitats are designed to replicate their native regions as closely as possible. Our highly skilled and compassionate keeper staff and veterinarians give these animals the best life possible while also working toward species conservation. Each day our staff presents at least 11 talks and shows that educate our guests on the plight of many species around the world, how mankind has affected them, and what simple individual actions a person can take to help protect these species. The state of the art Melvin J. & Claire Levine Animal Care Complex (ACC) provides for exceptional health care opportunities for the animals at the Zoo and is also used by other area wildlife organizations such as Loggerhead Marinelife Center. In support of our goals toward sustainability the ACC has earned Gold Certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by the Green Building Council.
Like the rest of the world around us, costs to maintain a first class conservation organization and cultural attraction like Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society continue to escalate. With nearly 60 years of history the grounds and animal habitats are continuously in need of maintenance, upgrading, and replacement. The generous support of donors, our board members, and the community is essential to continue providing the exceptional educational and cultural presentations that Palm Beach County has come to expect from Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society.
